CITY PROFILE SERIES (AMSTERDAM) Amsterdam is a beautiful city in Netherlands. Amsterdam is bound to have numerous fun facts regarding its nature, politics and history. Where does the name Amsterdam come from????? AMSTERDAM was named AMSTELREDAM, which referred to the dam in the AMSTEL RIVER. According to many historians, the name derives from the OLD FRISIAN “AEM” which means “RIVER” and “STELLE” which meant “SUITABLE PLACE TO STAY”. ONCE SURROUNDED BY DEFENSIVE WALLS………. Once the city was surrounded by walls which were meant to defend the city against an attack. They were built during the MIDDLE AGES. The walls were torn down in the 19 th century, but remains can be seen when cruising the canals.
